Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but they are smaller. They are often red or blue and are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. They can look like tree branches or spider webs with their short jagged lines. Spider veins can be found on the legs and face. They can cover either a very small or very large area of skin.

Many factors increase a person's chances of developing varicose or spider veins. These include:

Two methods are used at Mariposa to diminish the appearance of unwanted superficial spider veins: 

Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a liquid solution into the problem areas which causes the vein to harden and not allow blood flow.  The body then breaks down this ineffective blood vessel and reabsorbs it, causing it to disappear.  This is a good option for those deeper reticular veins, typically blue, green, or purple in color.

For those very tiny red spider veins, treatment with our Nd:Yag laser is often preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I expect to see results?

Improvement may be seen approximately 4-8 weeks after the first treatment.  The total number of required sessions depends on the extent and depth of the vessels.  Maximum clearance is typically achieved within 1-3 treatment sessions. 

How do I know which treatment method is right for me?

During your consultation, after your provider has examined the areas you desire to have treated, both options will be discussed.  Often times, it is beneficial to begin with sclerotherapy for the deeper veins and then once those are cleared, proceed with the laser treatment to “clean up” those last few tiny red spider veins. 

Does it hurt?

Treatment of leg veins may be uncomfortable for some patients.  This is easily managed by using external coolings or application of a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment. This is a no-downtime procedure.
